Sophoi is leading a team designing a ‘cutting-edge’ Results Sensemaking and Learning (RSL) system for the BuildingLife Initiative.  The purpose of the RSL system is to enable the BuildingLife initiative to learn how best to adapt to take smarter, more effective action in complex and dynamic contexts - enabling faster, more evidence-based decarbonization of the built environment. Sophoi’s approach to RSL represents an innovative evolution of more ‘traditional’ forms of MEL – RSL combines real-time and robust evidence with the collaborative and facilitated exchange of stakeholder experience and expertise, in order to ‘sensemake’ for adaptive management and wider new knowledge.

Laudes Foundation B Team MEL System Design and Implementation

Sophoi is leading a team on the MEL system design and implementation for the B Team – a network of influential leaders from multinational companies and civil society who are challenging the business community to set and achieve ambitious goals on Net Zero carbon emissions, workplace equality practices, and tax and ESG disclosure. The MEL system draws on the B Teams outputs and outcomes, as well as the unique way the networks engages the hearts and minds of leaders, forming a robust yet flexible evidence base for strategic decision making, reporting and learning.

Great Barrier Reef Foundation Resilient Reefs Initiative Evaluation

Sophoi is providing ongoing MEL support as well as a series of appreciative evaluations of the pioneering Resilient Reefs Initiative in four global coral reef restoration pilot projects – Ningaloo, New Caledonia, Pilau and Belize. We have designed and operationalised a Resilience Measurement Framework (RMF) across the Initiative and examined the innovations and behavioural shifts resulting from RRI’s unique resilience-based management approach.  Central to our is providing ongoing evidence-based and practical adaptive management insights to the site teams and overall Initiative management team.

Climate-KIC MEL for Systems Change

C-KIC’s purpose is to tackle climate change through innovation. Their focus is on focused on empowering people to change systems – through exploration, experimentation, and demonstration. Sophoi supported C-KIC with a complete redesign of their MEL system to better demonstrate progress, results and ultimately climate impact against their Transition in Time Strategy. The organisation-wide MEL framework aims to better position C-KIC as an institution at the forefront of sensemaking and learning on systems transformation through climate change innovation.

CIFF Meta-Evaluation of the Energy Transition Portfolio

Sophoi is leading the Southeast Asia component of a multi-year strategic learning-focused evaluation of the Children's Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) renewable energy portfolio.  As well as combining summative and formative evaluation components, the work includes an element of MEL needs assessment and capacity building with CIFF grantees to increase the quality and value of their results reporting and lesson learning

AfDB MEL system design for the Climate Change and Green Growth Department

Sophoi is part of a consortium designing and delivering of the AfDB Climate Change and Green Growth Department MERL framework, working in a partnership with AfDB counterparts as key partners in the process and in the production of MERL products.

The fundamental purpose of the MEL framework is to support transformational change both internally and externally, within the Bank’s approach to climate change and green growth, and in the impact it enables.

WRI - Global Commission on Adaptation Locally Led Adaptation MEL Working Paper

Sophoi worked with WRI to produce a working paper "Reshaping Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning for Locally Led Adaptation". We reviewed the opportunities and challenges in MEL for locally led adaptation, as well as consulting a range of actors involved in locally led adaptation MEL.

The working paper proposes key considerations relevant throughout the MEL cycle that align with the Global Commission on Adaptation's Principles for Locally Led Adaptation, including I) recognition of and response to structural inequalities, ii) promotion of local agency in decision-making and iii) generating value for local stakeholders.

Archipelago Eco Investors Plastics One Fund

Sophoi Impact worked with AEI to develop their impact investment theory of change and headline results and indicator framework for their Plastic Fund 1 Impact Measurement and Management (IMM). Sophoi Impact supported AEI in setting a practical set of targets and designing a tailored performance management and reporting system for various plastic waste investees for PF1, including firms involved in the substitution, recycling, recovery processes in the plastics sector. 

Thailand Refrigeration and Air Conditioning NAMA Evaluation and Learning Exercise

The NAMA Facility funds National Support Projects (NSPs) to implement ambitious, transformational, and country-led elements of Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Actions (NAMAs). This evaluation promoted learning, adaptation and accountability of the NSPs and NAMA Facility results. Sarah is part of a team developing the Theoretical Framework (FW) guiding the ELEs, and focuses on the process evaluation, as well as contributing to the final synthesis report.

World Bank / Adaptation Fund Innovative MEL Study

Sophoi designed and delivered the research process for an innovative MEL ‘landscape study’ to inform the Adaptation Fund’s future direction and strategy through the application of innovative, ‘cutting-edge’ MEL. The study was based on the concepts of social and systems innovation required to address climate change, and the extent to which current MEL practice supports these approaches.  Our research report for the Adaptation Fund reflected a need for transformation in the MEL sector to engage with systems innovation and the implications of this for the global MEL community.

CIFF China Carbon Pricing Phase 2 Evaluation

Sophoi conducted the evaluation of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) China Carbon Pricing Phase 2 (CCPP2) investment to support the development of China’s national Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). Sophoi led a seven-person predominantly Chinese Evaluation Team. The team combined Chinese sector specialists in emissions trading with international expertise in the design and successfully deliver of a complicated evaluation situated in a complex context.

Sophoi developed a robust and practical set of methods and tools to report results and facilitate learning within the UNEP ADAPT! programme in Sudan.  With a focus on output and outcome-level reporting, delivering ‘significant’ climate change and environmental governance results, the MEL framework is intended support ADAPT! to demonstrate and justify its results as a DFID-funded, UNEP-delivered programme, as well as position the programme as the ‘thought-leader’ on climate change and environmental policy and programming in Sudan.

As an Evaluation Quality Assurance and Learning Service (EQuALS) expert panel member, Robbie (Director of Sophoi) provides expert advice and quality assurance on programme strategy, design, results, evidence and learning to a range of programmes across the good governance, anti-corruption, and private sector development spheres – developing theories of change, drafting evaluation terms of reference, reviewing baselines, and designing MEL systems.

UK Prosperity Fund ASEAN Low Carbon Energy Programme Evaluation

Designed and initiated a formative evaluation for the four-year UK PF ASEAN Low Carbon Energy programme.  The evaluation assesses opportunities to promote low carbon energy green finance and increase global prosperity through reduction of energy emissions and energy poverty and increased ease of doing business in SE Asia.
